About the Artist

Born in Ahwaz, Iran, Mahdi Saki grew up surrounded by Arabic lullabies from his native province of Khuzestan, near the border with Iraq.
During times of war and unrest, dance and music became his refuge. After studying dance and theatre in Tehran, he gathered musicians from the independent scene around the contemporary folk project Kamakan.

Drawing on the musical traditions of southern Iran, Arab and Persian heritage, and both classical and contemporary poetry, Kamakan offers a melancholic yet powerful journey through sound and story.
Their first album, released in 2015, became an underground classic for the Iranian youth. Their second album was never authorized for release in Iran, and their third album, “IS”, was finally released in September 2023.

On stage, the project led by Mahdi Saki unfolds in various constellations, involving a rotating ensemble of musicians and singers. After a residency in France in November 2023, Kamakan began integrating electronic elements into their live performances, expanding their sound while preserving the emotional core of their roots.

Kamakan challenges narrow perceptions of a region rich in intersecting influences — Persian, Arab, Indian, and Afro-descendant — presenting a vibrant synthesis of cultures and histories. The project was featured in the 2024 WOMEX Showcase Selection in Manchester.
