Volkan Karacay

Volkan Karaçay is a Cologne-based musician whose work moves between tradition and experimentation. Drawing from the rich sonic heritage of Anatolia, he plays instruments from the saz family — including bağlama, kopuz, and tenbur — grounding his music in deeply rooted musical histories while pushing their boundaries forward.

His compositions unfold as textured, often improvisational soundscapes, where traditional melodies meet experimental structures, field recordings, and cinematic atmospheres. There is a sense of searching in his work — a movement between past and present, between familiarity and abstraction.

Working largely independently, Karaçay composes, records, and produces his music himself, shaping an intimate and self-contained artistic language. His sound resists fixed categories, instead opening space for reflection, memory, and transformation.

His live performances translate this into an immersive experience — minimal, precise, and emotionally resonant.
