Mitra Behpoori

Mitra Behpoori is an Iranian tar and oud player, composer, researcher, and doctoral candidate working across Persian music, transcultural music studies, contemporary sound, and music in the context of forced migration.

Mitra Behpoori is an Iranian tar and oud player, composer, doctoral researcher, and research associate at the UNESCO Chair for Transcultural Music Studies in Weimar/Jena. She is also a member of the Expert Committee for Intangible Cultural Heritage of the German UNESCO Commission.

She continued her musical career in Germany in 2014, first with Duo Delgosha, working across formats and genres ranging from traditional Persian music to interdisciplinary artistic projects, contemporary and electroacoustic music, and film music. Behpoori has engaged intensively with both the material and immaterial aspects of her instrument, the tar, and published two German-language essays on the subject in 2018 and 2022.

Alongside her academic career, she performs with and leads the Iranian women’s quartet ABAN Ensemble. Her festival appearances include Rudolstadt Festival 2023, UNESCO World Heritage Day Weimar 2023, Nowrouz Festival Moods Zürich 2023, and Ancient Trance Festival 2023. She currently works at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar / University of Jena and is completing a doctorate on music in the context of forced migration.
